Updates and Evolutions

Updates and Evolutions

Hi friends and future friends!

This is a post to share some updates about what I’m up to and what’s new with Both/And Finance. Specifically, there are three "evolutions" in my work that I'd like to let you know about.

Evolution #1: I'm teaming up with Revalue.

As of January 2025, I’ve officially joined the team at Revalue as a full-time Associate Advisor. Revalue is an independent financial advisory firm that specializes in investor education and values-aligned investing, including community investing.

At Revalue, I'll be able to continue the type of "finance systems navigation" support I'd previously been offering my coaching clients, plus more comprehensive personalized financial planning services as needed. My role at Revalue also involves helping build and grow their already leading-edge work in community investing.

I consider this a job evolution because Revalue’s values and mission are so closely aligned with my own. Throughout 2024, I worked with Revalue in various part-time capacities. As I got to know the team and the company further, it became more and more clear that Revalue is the right professional home for me. The work I’m doing there allows me to put my skills and passion to work in ways that feel true to what I'm "meant to do," while also getting to learn and grow as part of a team.

Check out this At a Glance handout to learn more about Revalue. I think you’ll see what I mean about close alignment with the work and ideas I've been developing here at Both/And Finance! Speaking of which…

Evolution #2: Both/And Finance will continue on, but in a different way.

Both/Finance will continue to be a website (and occasional newsletter) offering free personal finance resources for people who care about the common good. The primary purpose of this site, at least for the immediate future, will be to host the self-guided courses I rolled out last year. I developed these self-guided courses after searching everywhere for low-cost resources that melded consideration of both personal and collective well-being together with trustworthy financial information. I found there to be a major gap when it comes to resources in this area! The two courses you'll find on this site - #1) Financial Foundations and #2) Investment Management - are the outcome of my "passion project" of attempting to address this gap.

The educational resource gap that I was (and still am) striving to address is related to free or low-cost information. Therefore, it's important to me that some version of these Both/And Finance courses stay completely free. That’s what will be offered here on the Both/And Finance site. I’ll continue to request that folks voluntarily contribute financially while they are using the courses, but it will not be required.

However, I will no longer be offering coaching, office hours, or other personalized support through Both/And Finance. For those looking for one-to-one guidance or seeking more of a cohort experience for learning, I invite you to come find me over at Revalue. There, we have various tiers of offerings, including an educational platform and an online community called the Collaborative that you can also join for free to stay informed of our events and educational offerings.

Over time, I’ll work to integrate versions of the content I’ve developed on this site into the education we're already doing at Revalue, but I don’t have an exact timeline to share on that yet.

Evolution #3: The radical financial spreadsheets project is going international.

Since 2023, I've been collaborating with Katrin Wehrheim to develop a collection of Radical Financial Spreadsheets that offer an alternative to traditional financial planning software (which we have found to be laden with ideological assumptions and mathematical errors).

This Radical Financial Spreadsheets project is also evolving. We recently received a grant for this work from the UK-based Joseph Rowntree Foundation through the Wealth Hackers Initiative. In 2025, we are launching a beta group of values-aligned financial planners and coaches who will be helping test, iterate, and co-develop these tools further. We will see where we go from there! I'll keep Both/And Finance newsletter subscribers updated on any significant developments with this work.

In the meantime, one of the main "use cases" of these tools is the Both/And Finance Financial Foundations course. The Financial Foundations Template that you can download and learn to use as part of the Financial Foundations course is an example of the “simple” version of these radical spreadsheet tools. We also have more complex versions of these tools that we will be developing further this year. If you are interested in helping test these more complex tools (ideally after working through the Financial Foundations course and pushing those tools to the limit first), please reach out to me!

Want to keep learning about community investing and TBD Finance?

While various seeds of my work are beginning to "evolve" in exciting ways, I want to acknowledge that some things are also lying fallow for now. One of these is this very newsletter.

In particular, I’m temporarily putting on hold an intention I once had to make this a regular newsletter where I share stories and highlight work being done in the space of TBD Finance. If you read my earlier essays on this site, you'll notice that I keep promising that I'll get to regular posts about community investing "soon." But, in fact, I never quite do. And yet, if you were looking for that, I have good news. There are other awesome folks you can follow who are doing this (thank goodness for the village)! PLUS, I'll be doing a version of this through my work with Revalue, so the journey continues.

Here are some wonderful newsletter-like resources that I would recommend connecting to if you're interested in staying in the loop about community investing and/or continuing to explore the topics I've been writing about in my Both/And Finance essays:

Also, I'd like to note that I do go into community investing at considerable length in my Investment Management course. So, it's not that I never got to it here at Both/And Finance, it's just in a different format than I originally planned (within a course rather than as part of an ongoing series of newsletter articles). Furthermore, I still plan to occasionally write essays that I will share on this site and via this newsletter, but I expect these to be infrequent for a while.

Finally, but perhaps most importantly…

... if you are looking to be part of a learning community sharing resources and building knowledge about community investments and other topics in values-aligned finance... by all means please come join me and my amazing colleagues over at the Revalue Collaborative.

And, if you're curious to learn more about Revalue's financial advising services feel free to book time with me here.

Other questions, comments, ponderings? You can still reach out to me at contact@bothandfinance.com anytime.

Wishing you serenity on whatever journies you're on these days. I hope our paths cross soon!

Warmly,
Rebecca
